NEGATIVLAND PRESENTS
Adventures in Illegal Art:
Creative Media Resistance and Negativland

“Adventures in Illegal Art” is a 90-minute video and storytelling presentation by Mark Hosler, founding member of Negativland, with Q and A to follow. No lawyers were harmed in the making of these events!

Pranks, media hoaxes, media literacy, the art of collage, creative activism in a media saturated multi-national world, file sharing, intellectual property issues, evolving notions of art and ownership and law in a digital age, artistic and funny critiques of mass media and culture, so-called “culture jamming”.... even if you've never heard of Negativland, if you are interested in any of these issues we think you’ll find this presentation worth your time and attention.

Is Negativland a “band”? Media hoaxers? Activists? Artists? Musicians? Filmmakers? Culture jammers? Comedians? An inspiration for the unwashed many? A nuisance for the corporate few? Decide for yourself in this presentation that uses films and stories to illustrate the many creative projects, hoaxes, pranks and "culture jamming" that Negativland has been doing since 1980.

Most famous for getting sued for their “U2” single, Negativland has had many years of experience being a tiny thorn in the side of the corporate media and entertainment biz. They’ve released a gazillion CDs, do occasional tours, published a few books, make little movies, put on art shows, and were the subject of San Francisco filmmaker Craig Baldwin’s 1995 feature film “SONIC OUTLAWS”.

A NOTE FROM MARK ABOUT
THE LECTURE/VIDEO PRESENTATION
(if you're actually interested in putting on this event)

Since 1980, Negativland’s work has touched on a number of issues that are very much in public view these days - creative anti-corporate activism, media literacy, intellectual property issues and evolving notions of ownership and law in a digital age, the art of collage, artistic and funny critiques of mass media and culture, pranks and media hoaxes, and so-called “culture jamming”.

We get asked to speak about our work and the issues surrounding it quite often these days and have created a 90-minute film and lecture presentation all about our work which I have been traveling around doing all over the world. I’ve done about 75 of these presentations so far, and the response has been both humbling and enthusiastic. It’s designed to make sense to the audience and be enjoyable whether they are a bunch of hardcore Negativland fans or they’ve never heard of us before or anywhere in-between (and, in fact, it's good to emphasize this in any publicity that goes out as this seems to help with the turn out. It's also good to publicize the event to any community or college radio stations in your area as Negativland has usually done well on college radio).

Write to me for a tour rider that has more information about this presentation, tech requirements, links to bios and photos, etc. Of course the presentation gets tweaked so the talk fits into whatever context it will be presented in (for example, I would go into different directions if I was talking to visual artists than if I was talking to lawyers or film students or indy media folks or anarchists or hackers). It’s very flexible.

About my “fee” - I have no fixed fee for doing this. I am always pretty broke (Negativland seems to be a fairly well known group at this point, but has never done that well financially), I work seven days a week on Negativland projects, and live off of what little we make doing this. I have done talks anywhere from free to $2500. It depends on what kind of funding/making money situation you have. Obviously, the more I can get, the better I am able to keep doing this sort of work, so I do hope to get as much as I can!

I am a good public speaker and the presentation is engaging, relaxed, funny, thoughtful and even inspiring (or so I have heard). I like talking about what Negativland does, and enjoy making connections between all the issues I discuss and the "big picture".
