NEGATIVLAND DISCOGRAPHYEdited by Geo. Prepared with contributions from Jon Leidecker, Paldek, and Negativland.
This discography is an attempt to chronologically document the various releases by Negativland and reproduces information from the packages of those releases deemed interesting while excluding most non-personnel or track-related liner notes. Note that compilation appearances and OVER THE EDGE releases are each listed in separate sections. Please forward any corrections/additions to: georgeprepared@mac.com.

Every copy of NEGATIVLAND, whether LP or CD, features a completely original hand-made cut-and-paste front cover, mostly out of advertising images cut out of old magazines. 15,000 copies have been produced so far. The back cover text is the same on each LP copy, but is laid over different wallpaper samples. The CD issue comes in a 5X5" reel-to-reel tape box decorated with the above-mentioned design and several cardstock inserts, including one of several different recipe cards, and a SEAT BEE SATE button. There are no song titles on this release; tracks are only numbered (1-20).

Originally pressed on black vinyl, although later vinyl editions were on translucent blue vinyl. LP packaged with 8 1/2 X 11 printed insert (reproduced in CD) and a small card indicating that the unusual crystal-clear innersleeve was a "SELF CLEANING INNERSLEEVE". In fact, it wasn't, but it DID have the unusual effect of making the disc highly charged with static electricity, thus causing LOTS OF DUST to cling to the record! This card was, of course, left out of the CD version. The innersleeve was never heard from again.

LP edition originally issued with a 20-page booklet featuring article reprints, reviews and photographs from 1979-1987 (the printing negatives for the book are now lost) and a Car Bomb bumper sticker. Originally issued on black vinyl although unauthorized colored vinyl pressings exist. The Penguin version was issued on vinyl only in Greece (now out of print) and was distributed by CBS!!!
In 1999 Seeland reissued ESCAPE FROM NOISE in a reworked package designed for the CD format. Negativland always intended the original EFN artwork to be for the LP format only, and were never happy with Don Joyce's original painted cover image reduced to such small size on the first CD issue. The new version features that artwork full size as the front cover, with the remainder of the artwork reformatted throughout the package by ace designer Dan Lynch (http://www.sp3d.com). The new version of EFN is NOT remastered or remixed in any way, save for the addition of some CD mastering tomfoolery, nor is there ANY extra material added.

6. The Perfect Cut (11 Minutes)
7. The Perfect Cut (48 Hours)
The jacket and accompanying insert for the release have no production or personnel credit information other than a "thank you" paragraph. The insert has detailed background information on Negativland's media prank which sparked the project with a full-page advertisement for Christianity is Stupid T-shirts on the other side (with outdated ordering information). The NO OTHER POSSIBILITY video release (Seeland 005) features the Channel 5 news segment used on this record
A limited number of the Swiss RecRec version on CD and vinyl is available from Negativmailorderland. It is interesting to note that the RecRec LP version utilized a specifically different, glossy ink for the "bloody" effect on the "Helter Stupid" words splattered across the cover, which is closer to the original artwork intention than the SST LP version.
12"EP/CASSETTE/CD (SST 272)
release date: August 1991
1. I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For - 1991 A Capella Mix (7:15)
2. I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For - Special Edit Radio Mix (5:46)
Not available in any store (legitimately, or at a normal price, anyway) as swift and immediate legal action on the part of U2's label and management decimated this release almost as soon as it hit stores. A total of 6951 copies (the official count) made it out for sale, of which about 1600 or so were 12" vinyl EP's and cassettes and perhaps 5300 were CD's, plus 692 promotional copies. No production or personnel credits are listed. LP label art features spy pilot Gary Powers, Sr. on side A and a bassett hound on side B (also on the CD issue).
Bootleg CD copies do exist; it is relatively easy to spot counterfeits by the fuzzy, dupey-looking images screenprinted on the disc itself, and also by the UPC code on the back; if it is made up of dots instead of being solid, then it's a bootleg. There are also vinyl bootlegs of "U2"; some known versions include a 7" with a xeroxed sleeve originating in the U.S., a pink vinyl 10" out of Germany, and a recent compilation CD of various artists based around the "U2" tracks (FU2 - STUPIDLAND). For an exhaustive overview of the entire U2 debacle, see Seeland 013 "Fair Use: The Story of the Letter U and the Numeral 2". The famed recording is also downloadable from various web locations including this one.
In 2001, a mysterious bootleg label called Seelard Records (sic) produced a "reissue" of the infamous U2 record, "These Guys Are From England and Who Gives a Shit" (see below), which, unlike other circulating bootleg versions, has much related material added (we are currently stocking this version at Negativmailorderland).
12"EP/CASSETTE/CD (SST 291)
release date: 1992
1. Then (8:05)
2. Now (8:36)
Material on this release originates from a piece commissioned for New American Radio in 1990. Released as an immediate follow-up to the withdrawn U2 single, the back cover states that "this recording is dedicated to the members of our favorite Irish rock band, their record label, and their attorneys. The music is two U". No personnel listings.
THE LETTER U AND THE NUMERAL 2
MAGAZINE AND CD (Seland 008, ReCDec 51)
release date: September 1992
96-page magazine detailing U2 legal fracas, packaged with a 25-minute CD entitled "39. Crosley Bendix Discusses the Copyright Act", released as a limited edition of 4000 . Two months after release, SST Records crushed it out of existence with a lawsuit claiming, among other things, copyright infringement based on reproductions of press releases sent to the press by SST; "in essence, suing the band for printing (their) threat to sue the band" (Village Voice). An unknown quantity of magazines were shipped prior to the lawsuit, probably the majority of the press run. After SST and Negativland settled out of court, the contents of the magazine were reprinted in their entirety as the first section of Seeland 013, FAIR USE: THE STORY OF THE LETTER U AND THE NUMERAL 2 with a few slight modifications and deletions. The 25 minute piece from the CD comprises the second half of the CD accompanying "Fair Use".A limited number of copies of the original magazine and CD package were discovered in a dust-encrusted box and are available through Negativmailorderland.

Jane Timberlake (intro/outro lyrics and vocal on "We Are Driven"),

7. Four Fingers (8:47)Recorded on May 5, 1993 at the Belly-Up Tavern in San Diego, California. A bootleg release; $5 from the sale of every CD was anonymously donated to Negativland's defense fund in the wake of the "U2" lawsuits.
The black and white packaging includes: Loose visual descriptions of the action on stage during each piece and the band's set up, form letter from Casey Kasem concerning his final stance on Negativland's "U2" single, "Fair Use" essay by Negativland. NEGATIVCONCERTLAND is a DAT recording made from deep within a noisy, enthusiastic audience, with no "direct" line from the sound system; the band is playing through an overdriven rock club P.A., and their sounds frequently become inaudible under the hooting and cheering of the people standing directly around the microphone. (Negativland's note: This was also, unfortunately, the worst-performed and worst-mixed show of Negativland's entire west coast "Music For Lawyers" tour.)Also, many sections in the performance were highly dependent on the visuals, resulting in several puzzling or tedious moments when presented on two unedited discs. Still, as a souvenir or for a dedicated fan, this poorly-recorded set remains the only comprehensive document of Negativland's 1993 tour.

"Dead Dog Records" (Parts 1-9) was recorded and mixed by Negativland in the Summer and Fall of 1994. Track 10 of this CD was first released in 1992 as part of the original magazine/CD package "The Letter U and The Numeral 2". It was the only track on that CD.
270-page book detailing U2/Letter U and the Numeral 2 lawsuits, reprinting aforementioned magazine virtually in its entirety in addition to hundreds of more pages of material. No personnel credits. Included in an appendix are essays by L. Ray Patterson, Jason Marcus, John Oswald, Alan Korn, and Walter Alter. Later printings have slight changes in credits and other places. The third printing is actually of superior contrast and overall printing quality than previous editions.
7" (Eerie Materials)
release date: May 1997
1. Truth In Advertising (3:17)
2. Greatest Taste Around (2:16)
3. Taste In Mind (1:40)
"Truth In Advertising" is taken from a longer piece, ADVERTISING SECRETS, as commissioned by New American Radio. "Greatest Taste Around" is a slightly different mix than the version on the DISPEPSI CD. "Taste In Mind" is an outtake track from that CD, although the sleeve note erroneously lists it as available on DISPEPSI. No personnel credits.
CD (Seeland 017)
release date: July 1997
1. The Smile You Can't Hide (1:34)
2. Drink It Up (3:46)
3. Why Is This Commercial? (2:18)
4. Happy Hero (5:03)
5. A Most Successful Formula (3:30)
6. The Greatest Taste Around (2:14)
7. Hyper Real (:54)
8. All She Called About (3:23)
9. I Believe It's L (6:21)
10. Humanitarian Effort (:32)
11. Voice Inside My Head (3:46)
12. Aluminum or Glass: The Memo (3:46)
13. Bite Back (5:31)All of the cola commercials that were appropriated, transformed, and reused in this recording attempted to assault us in our homes without permission. Other sources reused include: talk radio, MOMMIE DEAREST, tabloid TV, Pepsi and Shirlie, documentary TV, Bryan Ferry, the news, Ice-T, public service announcements, Asha Bhosle, MC Lyte, The Clio Awards, traditional Burmese music, the OJ Simpson Trial, motivational marketing tapes by advertising executives.
"DISPEPSI" would not have been possible without the help of Steve Fisk ("I Believe it's 'L'" keyboarding and drum boxing), Shawn Wolfe (graphics wrangling), Catherine Carter (tuneless found warbling), Peter Conheim (authoritative voicing and number crunching), Harold Boihem (video jiggling), Arjan Schulte and John Skelton (commercial contributions), Craig Baldwin (image looting), Pat Maley (drum butchering), Matt Spiro and James LeBrecht (digital master assembling), and free legal advising from our team of lawyer operated salad shooters - Keith Aoki, James Boyle, Kohel Haver, Alan Korn, Jeffrey Selman and Peter Shaver.
Fearing trademark problems (as advised by five volunteer lawyers), the DISPEPSI title does not appear anywhere on or inside the release. A sticker on the original pressings of the disc instructed buyers to phone a "word of mouth line" to learn the actual title. Three months after the release of DISPEPSI, however, PepsiCo officially stated that it had no intention of ever taking legal action against Negativland for trademark or copyright infringement, so Negativland began using the actual title in press releases and on this website. CD packaged with One World Advertising fold-out. No personnel listings.Collector note: Due to a pressing mix-up, one 1997 repressing of the CD was inadvertently manufactured with a gospel recording inside (including the Christian anti-homosexual hit "It's Not Natural"), although the disc was silkscreened with the DISPEPSI artwork. The pressing was recalled, but not before a handful of copies (around 200) were sold, and not all of those were returned as defective. Certainly one of the rarest Negativland collectables...if not the only. Well, OK, except for U2.

1. Christianity is Stupid (4:20)
2. Murder and Music (6:59)
3. Escape From Noise (5:37)
4. Time (13:49)
5. Fourfingers (sic) (8:14)
6. The Record Industry (13:47)
7. Christianity is Stupid (pt. 2) (13:17)
Ultra-minimal packaging is limited to one 2 -sided tray card, printed in black and white, which reads: "This recording made possible by special agreement with Negativland" (sic, written in a friendly cursive font) and "Recorded from a live broadcast" (sic). The back cover reads: "'Perceptually and philosophically, it is uncomfortable wrenching (sic) of common sense to deny that once something hits the airwaves, it is literally in the public domain.' ... NEGATIVLAND."
This release, which was issued by SST to compete with Negativland's DISPEPSI CD in late 1997, is a bootleg in the most dubious sense of the word. It is _not_ authorized by Negativland, but pretends that it is, and as such flies in the face of the group's "yes-please-tape-us" edict. This CD has no information on it about when or where it was recorded; it was, in fact, recorded live in New York at the Knitting Factory in June of 1989 and was never broadcast in any way, shape or form. It is not "made possible by special agreement with Negativland".
LIVE ON TOUR is based on what would have been a legitimate Negativland "live" double-CD called LIVE STUPID, which was legally contracted for as part of the SST/Nland settlement over the U2 fracas. Instead of issuing LIVE STUPID in 1992 as planned, Greg Ginn (SST) sat on the finished tapes and artwork, which was his prerogative (although rather foolishly, since it could have sold very well and made Ginn a lot of cash had he issued it then). Nothing came of it and after five years, Negativland presumed it was forgotten and never to be released.
But in 1997, when faced with the imminent release of a major Negativland work on the band's Seeland label, SST rushed LIVE ON TOUR into stores in an apparent attempt to cash in. Unfortunately, though, SST chose to re-edit and shorten the LIVE STUPID master tape (without consulting the band, of course), change song titles at random, throw out the original artwork, original photographs and extensive liner notes that had been made to go with it, replace it all with a generic black and white cover, and even misspell the band's name in a snide nose-thumbing. They didn't even use the DAT master tape for it...LIVE ON TOUR is generated from a hissy-sounding cassette dub! And if that isn't enough, it retails for $17.98.
In an effort to counter its release, Seeland sent a neon-colored RIPOFF ALERT letter was sent to major retailers and distributors; the word was spread rapidly, and SST's sales have been appropriately low. Even before the mass-mailing of the alert letter, research indicated that most retail buyers smelled a rat and avoided the release.

Composed, performed, produced, recorded, mixed, edited, manipulated, and appropriated by Negativland and Chumbawamba
Art direction and design by Negativland and Peter Huestis.
Thanks to Vicki Bennett and People Like Us.Some of the "lyrics" on track one are from Alexander Berkman's book "ABC of Anarchism".
Liner notes contain a children's story featuring the Rolypolies (cartoony characters which mysteriously resemble those of a popular British childrens' show of the time). No personnel listing.Due to another surreal manufacturing mix-up, the initial pressing of this release inadvertently contained a Latin cumbia music CD, though the disc itself depicts the correct artwork. VERY few of these mistaken copies, if any, made it out to the general public and were thought to have been sent in early promotional mailings. The error was caught before the CD went into wide release. The defective copies bear the serial number "04589-A EXITOS RUMBO AL 2000" and are 70 minutes in length (as opposed to the Negativland CD's 20 minute running time)... as if you couldn't tell which is the wrong one by listening to it! (It's pretty decent contemporary cumbia and a good listen, actually.)

Of the multiple U2 NEGATIVLAND bootlegs which have surfaced over the years, this album-length CD on the mysterious Seelard Records (sic) label is surely the most comprehensive. In addition to the two original EP tracks (tracks #3 and #4 on the disc) the release is rounded out by a host of live and early run-throughs of the material, none of which is available elsewhere.Track #1 is a highly-condensed edit of a New Year's Eve 1989 Over The Edge radio broadcast in which the soon-to-be-nefarious material was first run up the sonic flagpole, complete with extremely bizarre vocalizings by the Weatherman. On the first live version which follows it on the disc, an entirely different U2 song from the one on the familiar tracks is used and abused ("Where the Streets Have No Name"). The EP tracks themselves appear to have been exacto-mastered from an existing CD original.
Following the two familiar cuts is the most unusual feature of the disc: tracks #5 - #10 are live recordings from San Francisco's Great American Music Hall in 1993. All six cuts are unreleased in any legitimate form, and appear to be taken from an excellent direct recording of the concert. As such, they are the only available high-quality versions of any of the music performed on the Music For Lawyers tour, only poorly represented on the "Negativconcertland" and "Live on Tour" bootlegs as mentioned elsewhere. Four of the six tracks are otherwise unreleased compositions written for the tour.
Lastly, the disc features a truly "Special Edit Radio Mix" of the EP's legendarily profane B-side which bore that title as a gag; in this case, all the profanity has been absurdly bleeped out. Packaging credits list contributors to this final track as "Byram Abbott and The Jet Black Hair People", but it's pretty hard to trust a bootleg. We'll probably never know who's responsible for this hatchet job.

Live recording (tracks 11-12) by Steve Vernon and mixed by Negativland.
This expanded reissue edition of the original DICK VAUGHN cassette is a vastly different version from the original release. While approximately 98% of the originally released material is included, it is resequenced and surrounded by previously unreleased elements.
THE CALIFORNIA SUPERSTATION gains most of its new bulk with the addition of more "Roy Storey Sports Line" episodes, as well as numerous short sections restored from the five-hour original master tapes of the broadcast. RINGO IS DEAD is a condensation of an OTE show by frequent Negativland collaborators Kings House, originally broadcast in 1984. MORIBUND MUSIC OF THE 70's features behind-the-scenes audio documentation never released to the public in any form. OSLO NORWAY AND PSYCHIC FREEZE appears in slightly condensed form.
DICK VAUGHN'S MEMORIAL CONCERT was recorded live at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco, California, during the "Music For Lawyers" tour of 1993. The material has never before been issued in high quality or in any "official" form. See THESE GUYS ARE FROM ENGLAND AND WHO GIVES A SHIT for additional material taken from this same concert recording.
