As we resurrected our own Seeland label in the wake of leaving SST Records, a bunch of unknown groups of noisemakers and musicians began to approach us about putting their CDs out on our label. Having a great distributor (Mordam Records, in Sacramento), but no money to press CDs with- even our own- and having just left a label in large part because we fundamentally disagreed with the industry-standard practice of the label owning a band's record 'in perpetuity', this presented a problem: How to help weird bands doing weird interesting stuff, without financing or owning their work?

Our answer was to offer a Seeland catalog number and access to our distribution to those few bands that both a) we really liked, and b) could afford to finish and press their own CDs. Seeland keeps just a few percent of sales to cover the cost of handling the money; the rest goes to the bands, and all rights to the music stay with the artist.

180gsTHE 180-Gs - 180d'Gs to the Future (CD)*
Is it possible that a Detroit doo-wop/gospel group could have created the first and only "greatest hits" collection of Negativland... via doo-wop/gospel covers?? Yes, it's true. From "Christianity is Stupid" to "Car Bomb" and "I Am God". This record is NOT NEGATIVLAND, but an incredible, worshipful simulation!

TWINK - The Broken Record
(CD)
Mike Langlie's toy piano band Twink is back with their debut release on Seeland - but without the toys. The Broken Record pieces together musical tidbits from hundreds of vintage children's records, creating crazy new songs with a modern feel. The tunes put a new spin on some old favorites, and take some familiar bedtime stories in bizarre directions. It's by turns charming, hilarious, perverse, and montaged into a crazy-quilt collage in the form of terrific little ditties. You've never heard kiddie music like this before!

POREST - Prude Juice for the Heritage Swinger (CD)
Somewhere between the manic and the meditative, this brilliant debut CD by Bay Area sound sculptor Porest (aka Mark Gergis of Mono Pause) blurs the sonic truths and lies about sheep, Gordon Lightfoot, paranormal misogyny, Gamelan-soaked war veterans, our Nazi heritage, law, order and diseases known well to those who have ever reluctantly caressed the cancerous underbelly of Americana...

THE EVOLUTION CONTROL COMMITTEE -
Plagiarhythm Nation
(CD)
Columbus, Ohio's legendary ECC predated the entire "mash-ups" phenomenon with an unholy marriage of Public Enemy and Herb Alpert back in 1996 ("The Whipped Cream Mixes" 7") ... now they're back with a brilliant 29-track plunderphonic cookbook of instant classics, including "Rocked By Rape" (which earned ECC a ceast-and-desist from CBS News, later dismissed)...

SLEEPYTIME GORILLA MUSEUM
"Grand Opening and Closing"
(CD)
At last! The world's "most closed museum" presents its first exhibit to the listening public. This "museum" is actually a brilliant Bay Area super-group of sorts (including members of Idiot Flesh, Tin Hat Trio and others) belching forth an ominous musical stew beyond easy categorization, in a netherworld someplace between early King Crimson and The Residents...

BOB OSTERTAG "Voice of America" (CDR)

It was the beginning of the 1980's and from my apartment on the Lower East Side of NYC, the world seemed to be going crazy. Ronald Reagan was being sworn in as President of the United States, something that no longer shocks us now but at the time was nearly unthinkable...

BOB OSTERTAG "Say No More" CDs 1&2 (2CD SET)
With Joey Baron, Mark Dresser, Gerry Hemingway
and Phil Minton

I began the Say No More project by asking each player to record solo improvisations, separately, with no communication with each other nor instruction from me. I then took the resulting tapes and, using a digital editing system, broke the solos into fragments and assembled a "band" piece-by-piece from the splinters...

PLEASE NOTE: CD #4 of this set is still available as a separate, single CD release (Verbatim, Flesh and Blood)

I put the live recording back into the computer, blew it into bits once again, and assembled a new composition, Verbatim, out of the debris. The group premiered the live version of Verbatim at the Taktlos Festival in March 1996 in Switzerland...
