Universe – Part 91

Universe Pt. 91

June 26, 2015

We begin with a suitably surreal tribute to Phil Austin of The Firesign Theatre who died a few days ago. This consists of Phil reading from his audiobook, “Tales of the Old Detective and Other Big Fat Lies,” mixed with various other Firesign records and radio shows that refer to space. He can’t be missed because he’s not gone. Then we move on through a wonderful bit of Richard Dawkins on design, creativity, and the Universe, along with a few other astronomers and astrophysicists discussing the creation of artificial planets for human colonization, The Solar System, star motion, etc.

Universe Pt. 89 What About the 30s?

June 12, 2015

Jumping back in radio space time, we intermix three science fiction serials from the 1930s, including Flash Gordon, Buck Rogers, and Tom Corbett, Space Cadet. Flash Gordon was the very first science fiction program to appear on radio in 1935. These old radio sci-fi antiques are full of non-stop action and silliness, and it’s all accompanied by swinging band music from the 30s.

Universe Pt. 87

May 22, 2015

Old radio space based science fiction occupies this entire show, with several stories taking place in space from the likes of Dimension X and X-Minus One from the 1950s, intermixed and played straight. Of incidental interest is how right and how wrong these dramatizations were about exploring space before it actually happened.

Universe pt. 85 Another UFO

April 24, 2015

This version of Another UFO focuses on a couple of radio call-in talk shows on UFOs, a recent one from the BBC, and an American one from Chicago in the 60s. Not much has changed regarding this subject anywhere. We begin with descriptions of NASA videos of UFO encounters in orbit, Nick Pope relates his experiences as a UFO investigator in government as government documents on 50 years of UFO investigations are being released, why we are not alone, and callers relate a whole variety of sightings they have had.

Bob’s Universe

March 27, 2015

With this flimsy premise, this show is actually a showcase for Bob Dylan’s music, including some of his rare recordings, studio alternate takes, bootleg live versions, and associated music from long-time playing pals like Al Kooper. As the space race of the 60’s proceeded all around Bob, here is a lot of his music that accompanied it.
