March 20, 2015

The centerpiece here is Arthur C. Clarke reading bits from his book, “2001,” surrounded by songs about space, scientists describing it, instrumental space music, and Receptacle callers doing what they do. Also authors reading from “The Fabric Of The Cosmos,” and “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door.”

Universe pt. 80

March 13, 2015

This show focuses on the early race to space between the U.S.A and the Soviet Union from the late ‘50s through the ultimate (and apparently final) end game of landing on the Moon in 1969. Much of this is told from the Soviet perspective, complete with Russian pop music touching on the subject. From Sputnik’s launch in 1957 which started it all off, to the catch-up efforts by America which eventually led to Americans being the first humans to walk on the Moon, we follow the details of this extremely productive and adventurous Cold War competition for supremacy in space.

Universe pt 79 Guitars in Space III

Feb. 20, 2015

We begin with Bud Choke reminiscing about what OTE used to be and what’s funny and what’s not. Then we finish this short series consisting of all rock guitar solos with comments and commentary on the Universe and its celestial contents, and just to make sure we are entertaining, we add more comedy this time from Firesign’s Roller Maidens From Outer Space.

Universe pt. 78 Guitars In Space II

Feb. 13, 2015

We continue with our inner and outer space survey of the Universe and lush hard rock guitar solos coming from our planet in recent years. Izzy Isn’t rejects receptacle appreciation and a party, but otherwise stays out of the way so you can enjoy this more or less extinct kind of hard and heartfelt music.

Guitars In Space

Jan. 30, 2015

After weeks of being broken, The Weatherman has fixed the Booper. We begin with a call from him to discuss the new nature of the refurbished Booper in detail. Then it’s on to “Guitars In Space,” which features Roger Waters solo album, “Amused to Death, and many different artists and tracks playing very hard rock guitar, along with more commentary on the nature and contents of the Universe.

Some live Negativland portraying space in the Cold War precedes an obituary for Ian Allen, an early member of Negtivland who died recently. Then we slip into Tiny Tim’s world of antichrist conspiracy, and then the universe of fact, fiction, and description around us. Here’s why stars wobble and time travel would be too expensive.

Universe pt. 75 Walt’s Space

Jan. 16, 2015

Mostly consisting of Disney’s classic Tomorrowland ride soundtracks, this nostalgic look at space exploration mixes Disneyland’s first trip to the Moon and The Mission to Mars before any of that had occurred. Various Disney symphonic music is added to make the whole mix like a future adventure in space from the past. Tapes from Apollo 11 add a contrasting taste of what it was like when we actually did go to the Moon.

The Rain Show

Dec. 19, 2014

After many days of solid rain in Northern California, this is a show in which I play disc jockey with all the rain songs I can find. Christmas is edging up from behind, but it’s mainly all about rain and the non-stop songs in all genres inspired by it, interspersed with receptacle callers on the Rain Line. You can’t get wetter than this.

Universe pt. 73

Dec. 12, 2014

Quantum physics is the disconcerting branch of modern physics that shows that actions at the micro level of physical existence are tied to our observation of those actions. When observation is missing, so is interaction at the quantum level. This show brings out physicists and mathematicians discussing this phenomenon at the foundation of observable reality which appears to rule the universe. Freaky but true.

Universe – Part 72

Universe pt. 72

Nov. 28, 2014

A thanksgiving episode about the history of Earth and the emergence of life right here in the Universe. What is required to make this possible? Well, turns out it’s chemicals, though we have never succeeded in chemically creating life in a laboratory, even with some very expensive equipment to simulate the climate and conditions of early Earth.
