Were back in the USSR with how the last brink of the Cold War sounded in 1989, both here and there. Bush the elder is inaugurated with a prayer, and then hes inaugurated again and again like propaganda. Salman Rushdies Satanic Verses is explained by the BBC, Howard Stern is still in trouble with the FCC, Pirate radio is still broadcasting from off shore ships as we revisit the history of Radio Caroline, and music and DJs from the year. Keep on rockin in the free world.

We here begin the next and final year in this radio history, inaugurating 1989 by delving into the radio jingle/station ID productions of Century 21 and other companies producing radio promos. The corporate sound takes over. The Exxon Valdez spills its guts, England compiles its top 40, The World Series San Francisco earthquake, odd DJs rant between jingles, and even odder music from 1989.

How radio was done Part 101

March 12, 2009 Solo
This part launches into Rap and Hip Hop as they were developing in 1988. An up to date glitch mix combines these with Jazz and Jazz poetry of the day, some featured Beatnigs, legal demons hiding in the rise of sampled music, and how that all spilled over into white peoples audio. Howard Stern hosts a radio debate between Timothy Leary and G. Gordon Liddy, then doing a national /”debate tour./” Live Bowie, more Media Warrior, Rick Sklar relates the history of format radio, and The Tower Of Music.

How Radio Was Done (Part 100)

Feb. 26, 2009 Solo

History plows on, oblivious to round numbers. 1988 airchecks collide, the KCMU media warrior, The Cocteau Twins, Nintendo and the Mario Brothers, Crosley Bendix reviews movies, George Carlin on Howard Stern, Rick Sklar interviewed, and some of our 60s music heroes still getting by in 1988.

How Radio Was Done Part 99

Feb. 12, 2009 Solo
This one takes a listen to more of the cut up and music collage work being done in 1988 – a fantasy radio show that could have happened on radio in 88, but seldom did. Lots of the pioneers and some then current pieces of sampled music and manipulated found sound that were rockin on in 88. Pop radio and its content intrude throughout just to remind you what was real at the time.

How Radio Was Done Part 98

Jan. 29, 2009- Solo

This 5 hour show inaugurates 1988 by covering the whole Satanic cult flap and religious fanaticism of 1988. We join various broadcast features on Satanic churches and their rituals of Devil worship, abduction, and violence. Also, the ritual abuse of children and their deprogramming, the relationship of rock music and Satanism, all of Helter Stupid by Negativland, demon possession and exorcisms performed, and a host of religiously paranoid broadcasters. And is any of it real? Then we move on to censorship in radio with Howard Stern and the FCC, Jello Biafra, and finally end it all with some best of OTE from ’88.
