Hello,

I was surfing and happened upon your web page (http://www.negativland.com/pastor/flyaway.html) . The first time I read it I wasn't sure whether to be shocked or angry. The second time I read it, I decided that pity would probably be the more correct feeling.

It never ceases to amaze me that those that seem to condemn the most are the very ones that appear to do so little for humanity. Apparently "witch hunts" are more to their liking. It also amazes me that those who condemn never, as a rule, have guestbooks on their sites or meters to show how many visitors they have, or a comment form. Wonder why?

I could take a turn at throwing stones and say that I recall a few "good, Christian ministers" whose names have made the headlines in regard to drunkeness and adultery. I won't though!

I think if ever there was a man that tried to pormote peace, harmony and goodwill in a world filled with hatred and fear, it was John Denver. Maybe, though, you don't feel like the fact that he supported such organizations as Habitat for Humanity, Earth Island Institute among many, and founded the Windstar Foundation was enough. Maybe what he did for disabled children, wildlife, feeding the hungry children of the world, saving our planet and oh, so many other very worthy charities and organizations wasn't enough.

I am just sorry that he died before my son had a chance to see him in concert. But we do listen to his music and watch his videos. AND love every minute of it!

You might want to rethink some of your views! I do believe even GOD might raise an eyebrow with you.

Dear Nan,

If God has eyebrows, I'm sure he has better things to do with them than to raise them. I must admit however, that you are an inspiration to me. I'll explain why in a moment. First off, though, you need not pity me. God has given me the greatest gift that any man could ever receive: His son Jesus Christ.

Jesus, while here on earth, went about doing good, not unlike John Denver, as you've emphatically stated. However, there's a obvious difference between your friend John, and my friend Jesus. Jesus saved mankind, while John failed miserably at saving the planet. The Bible tells us two things we can apply here: first, any man who does not accept Christ is lost and will have his place in the lake of fire, and secondly, God will eventually destroy the earth, and anything on or in it. These are known Biblical facts that even President Bush solidly stands behind.

My dear lady, I don't see how you can apply the term "witch hunt" to the truths posted here, unless you can tell me that John Denver was a witch on top of everything else he was! I understand the fuzzy feeling you must get when you read about secular organizations such as "Habitat for Humanism" supporting those who can't work or refuse to be gainfully employed, but what does this have to do with man's mortal soul? I can answer that question for you: Nothing!

So let's discuss what it is about you that inspires me. You called me to the carpet about not having a counter, guest book, or comment form on my website. My response to that is "GUILTY AS CHARGED!" So what shall we do? A counter is out, because the hate mail Jesus and I receive from angry men (and women) is so plentiful, I lost count long ago. Comment form? Too complicated to draw up, and I'm sure they could never be long enough for the likes of those who write to me daily.

But I've got it! Let's post some letters! We'll call it "Pastor Dick's Mailbox!" Pretty clever, if I do say so myself! Of course, there's not enough bandwidth to handle all of the constructive and not-so constructive criticism that floods in each day, so I'll pick out a few of the best letters and my replies, and post them on my site within the next couple of days. Please look for it, and know that it exists because of you.

Only because He died,
Pastor Dick

P.S. I'm glad to hear you're sharing Mr. Denver's videos with your son. I've said many times, that I enjoy watching these shows, despite his unacceptable lifestyle choices. My two favorites are the one where the giant spider traps the castaways in a cave, and the best is when they grow the radioactive seeds that wash into the lagoon.
