Vol. #4 ,Issue 4Yet another re-release from the messy split with SST, the Floptops repackaged THE STARTING LINE along with some completely new material under the name of ROTOTILLER SINGALONG.
Buyer beware! It looks like a double CD, but in fact only contains just one. What it does have is an authentic mystery item! Mine contained as very useful key chain and an informative newspaper clipping. The material is from the radio show that Negativland does, and thus isn't very musical. However, fans of Negativland will get a kick our of seeing the boys covering the auto shop world.

#23Packaged in a swank double-door jewel case, Negativland's latest audio serial tackles free form audience participation radio. Starting with smug car expert Dick Goodbody, the latest OVER THE EDGE chapter looks at the American fascination with the thrill of riding the airwaves. Besides a bit of auto trivia on "The Drive Line", we're also treated to the "Phone-In Sing Along"- the original radio karaoke. Negativland work the radio interactive format so smoothly, it's tough to discern fact from fiction. Innovative radio is dead - except for KPFA in Berkeley. Oh yes, and this little gem comes with a hilarious newspaper clipping promoting Dick's AUTOHIVE, and a swanky key chain. I'm off to the basement to see if it glows in the dark.

August 1995About one week before I failed shop class, narcoleptic prison escapees took to slumbering outside the garage. Big house duds soiled, the sleeping convicts mumbled their dreams of luxury sedans and bottled soft soap. Admittedly, while the days wore on and my grade fluctuated like America's interest in vitiglio, a nagging thought filled my head: What makes a good mechanic? Ask Dick.
Broadcasting live from Dick's Autohive, THE STARTING LINE is a radio call-in show about automobiles, and Dick is the knowledgeable host, sharing the mic with The Weatherman and Daryl Garrison. Games designed to stump auto-enthusiasts are laced with carts, turntables and effects that U2 are famous for and all in the name of the superhighway. Towncar and Brougham are frequently used words here. Filling stations, including the Soklahoma chain, are discussed. Nowhere is BART referred to, though a "pirate" recording of a rototiller (five minutes in full stereo) by The Weatherman reminds me of spray painting hi-jinks at the Embarcadero in the name of love.
"Even though I'm afraid of freeways, I deeply accept myself." When Dick shared his personal mantra for driving success, peace washed over me, and soon the dreams of those convicts became my dreams. A key chain from Dick's Autohive arrived in the mail and for days now the road has seemed, well, friendly! Swearing has been replaced with recitations of Chrysler's 1974 "touring" series. While THE STARTING LINE was originally broadcast in 1985, the rototiller singalong from November 1987 boasts the world's first radio karaoke. Embracing the complexities of the American automobile myth, Negativland amuse, agitate and mainly persevere.
