TRUTH IN ADVERTISING
1997
(Eerie Materials) 7" EP
Approximately 2,000 copies sold.

The new Negativland single from what should be a full length at the end of the summer. Apparently the Negativland boys have now, in their neverending quest to have their lives ruined by lawsuits from big corporations, taken to attacking advertising in general and Pepsi in particular.

I am in love with this 7". 3 short songs, all of which are more than just listenable. The first, "Truth in Advertising" is neat, lots of manipulated talk from a dollars and sense type show about confusing messages in ads coupled with a very evil sounding atmospheric track that would stand up just fine on its own. The last track, "Taste in Mind" is more sample cutups about Coke or Pepsi, which tastes better, over some silly reggae beats and vibraphone.

But the real gem is the track "Greatest Taste Around. As the reviewer for the station put it in a mere seven word review: "HOLY SHIT WE'RE ALL GOING TO JAIL." Stab after stab at the company known as Pepsi-Cola done in a catchy as hell barber shop-quintet manner; must be heard to be believed. I'm just wondering how long it will take before it's recalled and promptly becomes impossible to find, ala U2.

"I got fired by my boss - Pepsi, I nailed Jesus to the cross - Pepsi, children dying of disease - Pepsi, leading helpless teens astray - Pepsi. Everything still tastes the same..."

Truthin' down highway 666.
