Over The Edge Vol. 4: Dick Vaughn’s Moribund Music of the ’70s
Seeland 022 2CD set
Negativland has at last re-issued one of the final "lost" items from our back catalog – "Over The Edge, Vol. 4: Dick Vaughn’s Moribund Music of the 70’s," in a greatly expanded "memorial album edition."
Dick Vaughn was a would-be radio super-jockey... an innovator... a trend-setter. Or so he’d hoped he’d be when his Moribund Music foundation unleashed two controversial radio programs on the KPFA-FM airwaves back in 1984: "The California Superstation" and "Dick Vaughn’s Moribund Music of the ’70s". The former was a hit-saturated contemporary AOR music show, and the latter was widely regarded as the very first ’70s nostalgia broadcast. The response to these airwave onslaughts was sensational, particularly to "Moribund Music". Some angry callers demanded an explanation for why Over The Edge had "disappeared" and been replaced by very different programming. Others were thrilled, moved, emotionally wrought by the flood of memories triggered by the show.
Mr. Vaughn made extremely condensed (edited) "air checks" of his broadcasts, each telescoped down from their initial 5 hours, an age-old technique of highlighting the portions of the show when the personality was "on mic" in an effort to impress would-be radio employers. Sadly, these dreams were not to come to pass, as Mr. Vaughn’s untimely demise squelched a promising career.
This was initially a cassette-only issue on SST Records (released back in 1990), and ran only 95 minutes, but we’ve gone back to the vaults and re-edited and expanded it into a 155-minute 2-CD set. This vastly expanded version features material dating from both before and after his tragic death in an airplane crash. We’ve un-earthed lots more of Dick’s prank phone calls (he had a propensity for ruining other peoples’ radio shows as well as his own), off-air surveys, as well as Negativland’s live-concert and radio tributes to Dick after his death. Dick was truly ahead of his time and this release will surely cement his shoes in the celebrity walk of life once and for all.
